Inclusive and accessible language

The words that you choose to use in your content have power. Use that power well.

The words that you choose to use in your content have power. It's important to use words that don't assume bias, can be understood by an international audience, and don't offend or alienate your audience. Inclusive and accessible language is also easier and less expensive to localize.

Gender inclusive language

Don't use language that expresses bias towards specific genders.

Pronouns and gender

Don't use "he/she" or "his/her" in reference to a person whose gender is unknown. Instead, write in the second person ("you"), or refer to the person’s role. For example, "user", "employee", or "client". Alternatively, use the plural pronouns "they" or "their" to refer to a single person.

Metaphors, analogies, idioms, clichés, pop-culture references, and slang

Avoid using metaphors, analogies, idioms, clichés, pop-culture references, or slang in your content. This use of language may be specific to certain locations or cultures. Using this kind of language is not inclusive, it may alienate or offend your users, and may not help you to bring your point across. This use of language is also complex expensive to localize.

Anti-racist language

Don't use language that expresses bias towards a particular race.
